VOTING OPENS FOR PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS

The Caribbean Broadcasting Union is pleased to announce the renewal of a recent feature of the Caribbean Broadcasting Awards, the “People’s Choice Awards”.

This year’s entries, hailing from Jamaica and the Bahamas, are now available for voting by on-line polling.

Documentaries and other features from stalwart CBU members, the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas and the RJR Communications Group of Jamaica, are battling it out to see who receives the most on-line votes, before the on-line poll closes on July 31, 2016.

NEW AWARDS CATEGORIES

Coming on board as first-time sponsors are the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) with awards for the best radio and TV entries in Coverage of Disaster Risk as well as the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) supporting the award for Best Investigative Report.

Another new category this year is the UNICEF-sponsored award for Responsible Coverage of Children’s Issues. While long-time CBU partner, UNESCO Caribbean, introduces the first-ever prize in this competition for Excellence in Covering Climate Change.

The CBU is pleased to collaborate once again with the PAHO Barbados and Eastern Caribbean Office in presenting the Claire Forrester Awards for Best Health Journalism in radio and television. This award recognises the life and work of the late Jamaican journalist and health communication specialist.

And the best radio and TV entries in Agriculture will receive a trophy and a USD 500 cash prize, thanks to FAO Caribbean; while the UN Development Programme in Suriname once more celebrates the best entries focussing on the Indigenous Peoples of Suriname.

This year’s Awards Ceremony, to be hosted by the cable service Cubavision International of CBU member, Instituto Cubano de Radio y Television (ICRT) takes place during the Union’s Annual General Assembly in Havana, Cuba, from October 24 to 27.
